Ancient Nomads, Archaeology & Living Nomadic Culture

Discover a different side of Mongolia on this immersive 8-day journey through ancient history, archaeology, and living nomadic culture.

Designed for travelers interested in history, archaeology, culture, and authentic experiences, this small-group journey connects Mongolia's ancient civilizations with the nomadic traditions that continue to shape life on the steppe today.

Travel with Mongolian archaeologist Dr. Erdene-Ochir and explore important archaeological sites including Khar Bukh Balgas and Gol Mod, an important Xiongnu elite burial complex. Rather than simply visiting ancient sites, you will learn how archaeologists interpret ancient settlements, burial structures, artifacts, and the societies that created them.

The journey then takes you into the countryside of Erdenemandal, where you will stay with a local nomadic family in a traditional ger. Experience everyday nomadic life through seasonal activities such as milking livestock, preparing traditional dairy products, learning about pastoral traditions, and experiencing the warm hospitality of a Mongolian family.

A major highlight is the approximately 40 km horseback journey to Gol Mod. After learning the basics of Mongolian horseback riding, you will travel across the open steppe to the Xiongnu archaeological site. Along the way, experience the landscape on horseback and visit Urt Shiver Spring before returning to the nomadic family’s ger.

The journey continues to Jargalant Deer Stones, one of Mongolia's remarkable ancient monument landscapes, before heading to Tsenkher Hot Springs for a well-deserved opportunity to relax. From there, travel to Karakorum, the ancient capital of the Mongol Empire, visit Erdene Zuu Monastery and the Karakorum Museum, and finish the journey among the sand dunes of Elsen Tasarkhai, including a camel-riding experience.

With a maximum of 8 guests, this is a personal and in-depth journey rather than a conventional group tour. It is ideal for travelers who want to go beyond sightseeing and gain a deeper understanding of Mongolia through its archaeological heritage, ancient civilizations, living nomadic culture, and diverse landscapes.

From the Xiongnu and ancient cities to today's nomadic families — experience Mongolia through both its archaeological past and its living culture.
