A Challenging Journey to One of Mongolia's Most Sacred Mountains

Mount Otgontenger is one of Mongolia's most revered mountains, rising to approximately 4,021 meters in Zavkhan Province. This expedition takes you deep into a remote mountain wilderness, far from Mongolia's main tourist routes.

Over eight days, the journey combines a long approach trek, pack-horse supported camping, high-altitude acclimatization, and a challenging summit attempt. After reaching the Base Camp, you will have a dedicated summit day, followed by a weather reserve and recovery day to allow flexibility in changing mountain conditions.

Important: Physical Requirements

This is a challenging mountaineering expedition, not a standard sightseeing or trekking tour. The summit day may involve 10–12 hours of activity, approximately 1,300 meters of elevation gain, snow travel, crampons, and ice axes. Fixed ropes may be used depending on conditions.

Participants should have good physical fitness, endurance, and a willingness to undertake a demanding mountain expedition. Summit success depends on weather, snow and ice conditions, route conditions, and the safety assessment of the expedition team.

Morning – Hotel Pickup and Airport Transfer
Your expedition begins with a morning pickup from your hotel in Ulaanbaatar. We transfer you to Chinggis Khaan International Airport for your domestic flight to Uliastai.
Uliastai – Meet the Expedition Team
Upon arrival in Uliastai, you will meet your expedition team and continue the journey by 4WD vehicle toward Mount Otgontenger.
After approximately 60 km by vehicle, we reach the final point accessible by road.
First Night in the Wilderness
From this point onward, the journey will continue on foot. We set up camp at the end of the road and spend our first night in tents, preparing for the trekking and climbing journey ahead.

Morning: After breakfast, pack horses will meet us at camp. We load the main luggage, camping equipment, and other heavy supplies onto the horses. Travelers will trek with only light daypacks.
Trek: Continue on foot toward Mount Otgontenger, passing through mountain landscapes, alpine meadows, and river crossings. Today’s trek covers approximately 15 km at a steady pace.
Overnight: We will set up camp at a suitable scenic location reached during the day, depending on trail conditions and the group’s pace.
Support: Pack horses will carry the heavy equipment and luggage throughout the trek, allowing travelers to hike comfortably with light backpacks.

Morning: After breakfast, we pack up camp and load our luggage and camping equipment onto the pack horses. Travelers continue with light daypacks.
Trek: Continue trekking toward Mount Otgontenger, following the mountain trail to a suitable location where we can establish our Base Camp. Today’s trek covers approximately 12 km.
Base Camp: Upon reaching a suitable location, we establish our expedition Base Camp, set up the tents, and prepare for the following day’s summit attempt.
Overnight: Expedition tent at Base Camp.

Early Morning Summit Attempt:
After breakfast at Base Camp, begin the ascent at 06:00 AM. The route has no defined trail and requires a steady climb toward the summit.
High-Altitude Climbing:
From approximately 3,900 m to the summit, crampons and ice axes will be used while ascending the broad snow ridge. Fixed ropes may be used depending on weather and route conditions.
Summit:
After reaching the summit of Mount Otgontenger, take commemorative photos before beginning the descent.
Descent:
Descend immediately after the summit and return to Base Camp for dinner and rest.
Total trekking distance: Approximately 12 km
Total duration: 10–12 hours
Ascent: Approximately 6–7 hours
Descent: Approximately 4–5 hours
Elevation gain: Approximately 1,300 m

Recovery:
After the previous day's summit attempt, take a well-deserved rest day at Base Camp. Relax, recover, and enjoy the surrounding mountain landscape. Depending on weather and trail conditions, a short and easy walk or photography may be possible.
Weather Reserve:
If the summit could not be reached on Day 4 due to weather, wind, snow, or mountain conditions, this day will be used for a second summit attempt on Mount Otgontenger.
The activities for this day will depend on the weather, mountain conditions, and the safety assessment of the expedition team.

Morning:
After breakfast, we pack up the Base Camp and load our luggage and camping equipment onto the pack horses.
Return Trek:
Continue trekking back along the route we came in on. Travelers will carry only light daypacks while the pack horses transport the main luggage and camping equipment.
Today’s trek covers approximately 20 km, taking us as close as possible to the point where the vehicles can meet us.
Evening:
We will establish camp at a suitable location as close as possible to the vehicle meeting point and spend the night in tents.

Morning – Meet the Vehicles:
After breakfast, continue trekking to the vehicle meeting point. Once we arrive, load the luggage and camping equipment into the 4WD vehicles.
Take a moment to say goodbye to the pack horses and local guides who have accompanied us throughout the expedition.
Journey to Uliastai:
Begin the drive back to Uliastai, enjoying the changing landscapes along the way.
Nomadic Family Visit:
On the way to Uliastai, visit a local nomadic family and experience a glimpse of traditional Mongolian nomadic life.
Evening:
Continue to Uliastai and check in at the hotel for a well-deserved rest after the expedition.
