  • Into the Wild: Summiting Mt. Must

Embark on an exclusive high-altitude expedition into the remote Turgen–Kharkhiraa mountain region of Western Mongolia. Our journey begins on the Ölgii side of the Altai and takes us deep into a pristine wilderness of rugged valleys, glaciers, and high mountain passes.

The ultimate goal is to stand on the summit of Mt. Must (4,037m), one of the highest and most remote peaks of the Mongolian Altai. After the summit, rather than retracing our route, we continue on foot across the mountains toward the Ulaangom side, creating a true point-to-point mountain traverse.

This is more than a summit climb—it is a complete wilderness expedition combining high-altitude mountaineering, horse and camel-supported trekking, remote mountain landscapes, and the natural beauty of Uvs Lake.

    • Expedition Dining: A private chef accompanies the expedition, preparing fresh, nutritious, high-energy meals throughout the journey. Traditional Mongolian cuisine is combined with international-style meals, with fresh vegetables, hot drinks, and appropriate nutrition provided even during the mountain expedition.
    • Accommodation: Experience Mongolia through a combination of comfortable city hotels, traditional ger camps, and professional expedition tents in the mountains. Portable toilet facilities and basic hygiene equipment are provided during the remote trekking and climbing sections.
    • Professional Mountain Support: Our experienced mountain guides lead the summit attempt and make real-time decisions based on weather, snow and glacier conditions, route safety, and the physical condition of the group. Crampons, ice axes, ropes, and other technical equipment are used when required.
    • Horse & Camel Caravan: Once we leave the vehicle-accessible area, local horses and Bactrian camels carry the expedition's main equipment, food, tents, and luggage. Trekkers carry only their personal daypacks, allowing the group to focus on the demanding mountain journey.
    • Point-to-Point Expedition: Instead of returning along the same route after summiting Mt. Must, we continue across the mountain terrain toward the Kharkhiraa–Turgen side and descend toward Dund Khoroo, where our support vehicle meets the group. This creates a genuine cross-mountain expedition rather than an out-and-back climb.
    • Western Mongolia's Remote Wilderness: Travel through one of Mongolia's least-developed and most spectacular mountain regions, far from the country's main tourist routes. The expedition combines remote alpine terrain with the cultural landscape of Western Mongolia.
    • Uvs Lake: Following the mountain expedition, recover beside Uvs Lake, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape, staying at a designated tourist ger camp rather than camping directly on the lakeshore.

The real expedition begins today.
We trek through remote mountain valleys toward the Base Camp of Mt. Must (4,037 m). Horses and camels travel with the group, carrying the expedition equipment while trekkers carry only their personal daypacks.
The landscape gradually changes from open valleys to rugged alpine terrain, with increasingly dramatic views of the surrounding Altai mountains.
Evening: Arrive at Base Camp, settle into the expedition tents, and receive a detailed briefing for the summit attempt.

After breakfast, we begin the ascent toward High Camp, approximately 6 km above Base Camp.
The trail becomes increasingly rugged as we enter the high-altitude environment. The pace will be deliberately controlled to allow the team to acclimatize and conserve energy for summit day.
Afternoon: Establish High Camp and prepare climbing equipment.
Evening: Early dinner and final summit briefing.
Important: The exact High Camp location may be adjusted by the mountain guide according to snow and glacier conditions.

Summit Day.
We begin before dawn under the supervision of our professional mountain guides.
Using appropriate mountaineering equipment, including crampons, ice axes and ropes where required, we ascend toward the summit of Mt. Must (4,037 m).
The final ascent is demanding and conditions can change rapidly at altitude. The mountain guide will determine the safest route and pace.
Summit: Mt. Must – 4,037 m
After reaching the summit, we descend from the peak and do not retrace our route back toward the original Ölgii-side approach.
Instead, the expedition begins its traverse toward the Ulaangom side of the Kharkhiraa–Turgen massif.
This makes the expedition a true point-to-point mountain traverse, rather than an out-and-back climb.
Overnight: Mountain camp along the traverse route.

Today we continue descending and traversing through the remote high valleys toward the Kharkhiraa Pass.
The terrain gradually changes from high alpine surroundings to broad mountain valleys. The support caravan continues to carry the expedition equipment.
Depending on weather and trail conditions, the mountain guide may adjust the overnight camping location.
Highlight: Panoramic views toward the Kharkhiraa and Turgen massifs and the dramatic valleys below.

We descend from the high mountain environment toward the Dund Khoroo area.
This section follows established mountain trekking terrain used in the Kharkhiraa–Turgen region. Existing trekking itineraries connect the Kharkhiraa Pass area with Dund Khoroo and the Kharkhiraa River valley.
Afternoon: Our vehicle crew will be waiting at the pre-arranged meeting point near Dund Khoroo.
We say farewell to the local horse and camel handlers and transfer our expedition equipment into the vehicles.
Overnight: Depending on the exact vehicle meeting point, camp or accommodation en route.

After breakfast, we leave the mountain region by private 4WD vehicle and drive toward Ulaangom.
After several days of high-altitude mountaineering and trekking, today is intentionally designed as a recovery day.
From Ulaangom, continue toward Uvs Lake, Mongolia's largest lake.
We stay at a designated tourist ger camp rather than camping independently on the lakeshore, providing a more comfortable and hygienic recovery after the expedition.
Evening: Relax at the camp and enjoy the spectacular sunset over Uvs Lake.
