Tour Overview: Khüiten Peak & Altai Tavan Bogd Expedition

The Altai Tavan Bogd (Five Holy Peaks) is one of Mongolia's most spectacular high-mountain regions and home to Khüiten Peak (4,374 m), the highest point in Mongolia.

The expedition takes you deep into the remote Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, beginning with the journey from Ölgii to the Tsagaan Gol (White River) Valley before trekking to Base Camp. From there, the itinerary combines a dedicated acclimatization ascent of Malchin Peak (4,050 m) with a guided approach to Khüiten Peak's Advanced Base Camp and a summit attempt on Mongolia's highest mountain.

The route includes glacier travel, high-altitude trekking and technical mountaineering under the supervision of experienced mountain guides. A dedicated reserve day is included to allow flexibility for changing weather and mountain conditions.

Expedition Highlights

  • Summit Mongolia's Highest Point: Attempt the summit of Khüiten Peak (4,374 m), the highest point in Mongolia.
  • Acclimatization on Malchin Peak: Climb Malchin Peak (4,050 m) to prepare for the higher-altitude Khüiten Peak ascent.
  • Potanin Glacier: Experience glacier terrain within the spectacular Altai Tavan Bogd mountain range.
  • Remote Wilderness: Trek through the Tsagaan Gol Valley and the remote high-altitude landscapes of western Mongolia.
  • Professional Mountain Guides: Climb with experienced guides familiar with the terrain, glacier conditions and challenges of the Altai range.
  • Built-in Reserve Day: A dedicated weather contingency day provides additional flexibility for the summit attempt.

Is This Tour Right for You?

This expedition is designed for physically fit and experienced trekkers and mountaineers who are comfortable with long days at high altitude and challenging mountain terrain.

Participants should be prepared for glacier travel, steep and uneven terrain, changing weather conditions and sustained physical exertion. Previous high-altitude trekking or mountaineering experience is strongly recommended.

The itinerary is carefully structured to allow acclimatization while maintaining an efficient expedition schedule. Summit success cannot be guaranteed, as the final decision to proceed is determined by weather, glacier conditions and the safety of the group.

Important Notes

Mountain Safety:
Weather and mountain conditions in the Altai can change rapidly. The summit attempt will only proceed when conditions are considered safe by the lead mountain guide. Safety always takes priority over reaching the summit.

Domestic Flights:
Domestic flight schedules between Ulaanbaatar and Ölgii are subject to airline availability and may change during the summer season. The itinerary may be adjusted accordingly to accommodate the final flight schedule.

Expedition Schedule:
The itinerary includes a reserve day to provide flexibility in case weather or mountain conditions affect the planned summit attempt.

Upon arrival, meet your expedition team and load your equipment into the expedition vehicles.
We then begin the overland journey toward Altai Tavan Bogd National Park. The route follows remote mountain valleys and gradually leaves the settled areas of Bayan-Ölgii behind as we approach the high Altai.
Continue toward the Tsagaan Gol (White River) Valley, the gateway to the Tavan Bogd mountain region and the starting point for the trek toward Base Camp.
Set up camp in the valley and enjoy dinner with the expedition team. Your guides will review the following day's trekking route and organize the equipment and supplies for the journey to Base Camp.
Overnight: Tented Camp
Important Note on Domestic Flights

After an early breakfast at Base Camp, begin the acclimatization ascent to Malchin Peak (4,050 m / 13,287 ft).
The route follows rocky and uneven mountain terrain toward the summit. Malchin Peak provides an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience at higher altitude before the upcoming Khüiten Peak climb.
From the summit, enjoy panoramic views across the Altai Tavan Bogd mountain range and the surrounding glacier-covered valleys, including views toward the Potanin Glacier.
After spending time at the summit, descend carefully back to Base Camp. The descent can be particularly demanding because of loose rock and scree, so sturdy hiking boots and trekking poles are strongly recommended.
Trekking Details
Summit altitude: 4,050 m
Elevation gain: Approx. +1,010 m
Elevation loss: Approx. −1,010 m
Trekking distance: Approx. 12 km
Trekking time: Approx. 7–9 hours
Trekking Note
Although Malchin Peak does not normally require technical climbing equipment under suitable conditions, the route involves steep sections, loose rocks and scree. Weather and trail conditions can change quickly at high altitude.

With the support of our mountain guides, we continue across the glacier toward Advanced Base Camp at approximately 3,600 m.
Once at ABC, settle into camp, organize climbing equipment and review the summit plan with the guides. The remainder of the day is dedicated to rest and preparation for the summit attempt.
Trekking Details
ABC altitude: Approx. 3,600 m
Trekking distance: Approx. 8 km
Trekking time: Approx. 5–6 hours
Elevation gain: Approx. +560 m
Mountaineering Note
The glacier section requires appropriate mountaineering equipment and experienced mountain guides. Depending on glacier and weather conditions, the team may use crampons, harnesses, ropes and ice axes. The exact climbing method will be determined by the guides according to current conditions.

The route involves high-altitude glacier travel and sections of steep snow and ice. The climbing team will use appropriate mountaineering equipment, including crampons, ice axes, harnesses and ropes, according to current conditions. Participants will remain under the supervision of experienced mountain guides throughout the ascent.
After reaching the summit, take time to enjoy the spectacular panoramic views across the Altai Tavan Bogd range and the surrounding territories of Mongolia, Russia and China.
We then begin the descent toward Base Camp. The descent will be paced carefully to manage fatigue and altitude exposure.

Duration: Approx. 10–12 hours
Terrain: Glacier, snow and rocky sections
Technical equipment: Crampons, ice axe, harness and rope system as required

Weather conditions in the high Altai can change rapidly. This reserve day is built into the expedition schedule to provide flexibility for the Khüiten Peak summit attempt.
If weather or mountain conditions prevent a summit attempt on Day 6, this day will be used to make another attempt when conditions are considered safe by the lead mountain guide.
If the summit has already been successfully reached, the day will be used for rest and recovery before beginning the descent from the high mountains. Depending on conditions and the group's energy level, a short walk around the surrounding mountain valleys may also be possible.
The final decision regarding the summit attempt will be made by the lead mountain guide based on weather, glacier conditions and overall group safety.
Important
Summit success cannot be guaranteed, as mountain weather and glacier conditions are beyond the control of the expedition team. Safety will always take priority over reaching the summit.
