Karakorum Overview

Located in central Mongolia, Karakorum was once the capital of the Mongol Empire, established by Ögedei Khan in the 13th century. At its peak, it was a vibrant and cosmopolitan city, where cultures, religions, and trade routes from across Asia and Europe converged.

Today, visitors can explore the remains of this historic city and visit the nearby Erdene Zuu Monastery—Mongolia’s oldest Buddhist monastery, built on the ruins of the ancient capital.

Arrive in Ulaanbaatar by 19:00. After clearing immigration and collecting your luggage at Chinggis Khaan International Airport, you will be warmly greeted by your English-speaking guide.
Travel by private vehicle (approx. 1.5 hours) to the Mongol Nomadic Cultural Heritage Center. Upon arrival, experience the genuine hospitality of a Mongolian nomadic family and settle into your accommodation.

After breakfast, immerse yourself in the daily life of Mongolia’s nomads. Taste traditional dairy products, including airag (fermented mare’s milk), and enjoy a small cultural feast.
Take part in hands-on activities such as milking livestock and learning traditional dairy processing techniques. Watch an archery demonstration and try traditional games.
Experience authentic modes of transport including yak carts, ox carts, camel riding, and horseback riding. You will also have the opportunity to wear traditional Mongolian clothing for memorable photos.
In the afternoon, journey to Karakorum, the ancient capital of the Mongol Empire (approx. 4 hours).
En route, stop at Elsent Tasarkhai, where you can enjoy a short camel or horse ride through the semi-desert landscape.
Upon arrival, visit the historic Erdene Zuu Monastery, one of Mongolia’s oldest Buddhist monasteries.

After breakfast, explore the highlights of Karakorum. Visit the Karakorum Museum and discover artifacts from the ancient Mongol Empire.
See the famous stone turtle monuments that once marked the boundaries of the imperial city.
In the afternoon, return to Ulaanbaatar (approx. 5 hours), stopping for lunch along the way.
Upon arrival, enjoy free time in the city. Your guide will be happy to recommend and accompany you to places of interest, such as local markets, shops, or cultural sites.
