Mount Otgontenger Climbing Tour: The Highest Peak of the Hangai Mountains
Duration
7 nights and 8 days
Mount Otgontenger, the highest peak in the Hangai Mountains, stands at an elevation of 4,021 meters and is located in the Zavkhan Province to the west. The summit is covered in permanent snow, with steep rock faces rising dramatically on the northern side. In 1992, the Mongolian government designated 1,000 square kilometers surrounding Mount Otgontenger as a national park. As a result, the area is free from livestock and human settlements, offering pristine natural beauty.
Situated 1,000 kilometers from Ulaanbaatar, this 4,000-meter mountain provides an excellent opportunity to experience unspoiled nature. You need not worry about carrying heavy climbing equipment or sleeping bags, as we provide these. However, if you prefer to use your own gear, you are welcome to do so. The tour is open to anyone with good physical stamina, whether or not you have previous mountain climbing experience. Our company specializes exclusively in climbing tours, ensuring a focused and professional experience.

Tour Plan
Board the direct flight with MIAT Mongolian Airlines, departing Narita Airport at 14:30 and arriving in Ulaanbaatar at 19:00. Upon arrival at Chinggis Khaan International Airport, complete the immigration and baggage claim processes. A Japanese-speaking guide will meet you in the arrival hall. Afterward, transfer by private vehicle to your hotel in Ulaanbaatar (approximately 1 hour 40 minutes, elevation 1300 m, distance 52 km).
After breakfast at the hotel, travel to Chinggis Khaan International Airport with your Japanese climbing guide. Upon arrival at Uliastai airport, you will be greeted by the local driver, assistant guide, and cook. Transfer to your hotel in Uliastai (with shower facilities). Elevation is 1750 m, and the vehicle transfer covers 6 km.
After an early breakfast, depart at 06:30. Drive for 2 hours along the river originating from Mount Otgontenger to the summer camp at the entrance of the national park (elevation 2250 m). Here, meet the pack horses and horse guide, and obtain the necessary permits. Due to the mountain’s spiritual significance and past avalanche incidents, access to the area is strictly controlled. Leave the vehicle and begin trekking, crossing fast-flowing small rivers, so prepare appropriate footwear. Riding horses is possible but not recommended for tourists. The trek also serves as acclimatization training. After a light lunch, continue trekking to the base camp (7.5 hours). The base camp is situated at an elevation of 2700 m, with 93 km by vehicle and a trekking distance of 25 km.
After breakfast at the base camp, start the ascent at 06:00 from the base camp (elevation 4021 m). The climb will take 6-7 hours, with no defined trail. From 3900 meters to the summit, you will use crampons and ice axes on the wide snow ridge. Fixed ropes may be used depending on the conditions. After reaching the summit and taking commemorative photos, descend immediately. Return to the base camp for dinner and rest (distance: 12 km, duration: 10-12 hours, elevation gain: 1300 m, descent: 4-5 hours).
Have breakfast at the base camp and depart for the vehicle at 10:00. Retrace the route taken earlier, enjoying the beautiful summer landscape of Otgontenger. Enjoy a packed lunch prepared by the cook amidst nature. The journey back to the summer camp takes 6-7 hours, followed by a 2-hour drive to Uliastai. After arriving at the hotel, enjoy dinner at a local restaurant (with shower facilities). Elevation is 1750 m, and trekking distance is 25 km.
Due to the high-altitude environment, weather conditions can be unpredictable. The reserve day is essential to account for any unforeseen circumstances. If the reserve day is not needed for weather issues, you can visit a nomadic ger or explore other activities.
After breakfast at the hotel, enjoy some free time to explore the town or rest at the hotel before your flight. Upon arrival in Ulaanbaatar, transfer to your hotel by private vehicle, with a stop for shopping at a cashmere factory. After checking in at the hotel, visit locations such as Nomin Department Store, Sukhbaatar Square, and Gandantegchinlen Monastery. Return to the hotel for dinner. Elevation is 1300 m, and the distance covered is 52 km.
Depart for the airport with your Japanese guide. Share your Mongolian memories with the guide as you head to the airport. Board the direct flight with MIAT Mongolian Airlines, departing Ulaanbaatar at 08:00 and arriving at Narita at 13:30. Arrive at Narita Airport.
Visiting Mongolia was an absolute dream come true! The ancient ruins are truly mesmerizing, and the views are breathtaking.
Thank you very much for your support towards climbing Otgontenger this time.
Being able to communicate in Japanese for everything from email exchanges during the preparation stage to on-site follow-up was really helpful for me, as I don't have any language skills.
During the climb, the two young guides supported me as I was about to give up due to the blizzard and snow walls, and successfully guided me to the summit. I was surprised to hear that the company has only been established for a few years. I pray that it will continue to prosper.
Please take me somewhere else.
I am very grateful to the four of you for giving me your support.
The starry sky was beautiful, and the mountains, rivers, and flowers were beautiful.
I had a cold and was having a hard time, but with the help of the staff, I was able to climb Khuiten.
thank you.
I felt like I was able to climb a mountain for the first time in a while.
Also, I am very satisfied with the "hospitality" of the staff, including Mr. Uruka.
However, as we get older, we often forget things, and we apologize for the inconvenience. Thank you for your continued support.
Thank you very much.
