Khagiin Khar Lake: Mongolia's Hidden Wilderness Trek

Deep in the remote Khan Khentii wilderness lies Khagiin Khar Lake, a pristine mountain lake surrounded by dense taiga forests, rugged passes, rivers, and untouched valleys.

This is not a conventional sightseeing tour. There are no roads leading directly to the lake, no permanent tourist camps, and very little sign of modern civilization. The journey itself is the adventure.

Over several days, you will trek through the wild landscapes of the Khentii Mountains, crossing forests, marshes, mountain passes, and clear mountain streams before reaching the secluded shores of Khagiin Khar Lake.

Your main luggage and camping equipment will be transported by pack horses, allowing you to trek with a light daypack while experiencing the wilderness on foot. A personal riding horse can also be arranged for travelers who would like to ride part of the route.

At the lake, take time to slow down and experience the silence of the wilderness. Enjoy the scenery, photograph the surrounding mountains and forests, explore the area on foot, or simply relax beside the water under Mongolia's vast open sky.

This trek is designed for active travelers who want to go beyond Mongolia's classic tourist routes and experience a remote landscape that very few visitors reach.

What makes this trek special?

  • Trek deep into the remote Khentii Mountains

  • Discover the secluded Khagiin Khar Lake

  • Hike through pristine taiga forests, valleys, marshes, and mountain passes

  • Travel with pack horses carrying your main luggage and camping equipment

  • Experience wild camping far from roads and tourist infrastructure

  • Enjoy exceptional opportunities for landscape and wildlife photography

  • Optional horseback riding during the trek

  • Experience Mongolia's wilderness with an experienced English-speaking trekking guide

Khagiin Khar Lake is not simply a destination you visit — it is a place you earn by walking into the wilderness.

07:00 AM – Depart from Ulaanbaatar
Our journey into the remote Khentii wilderness begins early in the morning. We leave Ulaanbaatar by 4WD and travel toward the entrance of the national park, where the paved roads give way to rough mountain tracks.
After arriving at the trailhead, we have an outdoor lunch and prepare for the trek. Your main luggage and camping equipment are loaded onto pack horses, allowing you to carry only a light daypack during the hike.
Trek across Yudeg Pass
We begin walking into the wilderness, crossing Yudeg Pass at 1,985 meters. The trail leads through mountain landscapes and forest as we gradually leave roads and modern infrastructure behind.
The first day is designed to ease you into the remote environment while giving you your first taste of the Khentii Mountains.
Evening at Töl River
After approximately 12 km of trekking, we reach the Töl River and set up camp beside the water.
Enjoy dinner by the riverside and your first night under the open Mongolian sky.

Into the Deep Taiga
After breakfast, we leave Töl River and continue deeper into the remote Khentii wilderness. Today's trek takes us through dense taiga forest, following remote trails where there are no roads, tourist facilities, or permanent settlements.
The terrain becomes more challenging as we gradually ascend toward Kherem Pass, crossing forested slopes, uneven ground, small streams, and sections of natural wilderness along the way.
The First View of Khagiin Khar Lake
After crossing the pass, the landscape begins to open. From the higher ground, you will catch your first view of Khagiin Khar Lake, hidden deep among the surrounding mountains and forests.
After hours of trekking through the wilderness, seeing the dark waters of the lake for the first time is one of the most rewarding moments of the journey.
We then descend toward the lakeshore and make our way to our campsite.
Evening by Khagiin Khar Lake
Arrive at the lake and settle into your tent beside the water.
Take some time to relax after the day's trek, walk along the shoreline, photograph the surrounding mountains and forest, or simply enjoy the silence of one of Mongolia's most remote natural landscapes.

A Quiet Morning at Khagiin Khar Lake
Wake up beside the secluded waters of Khagiin Khar Lake and enjoy a slow morning in the wilderness.
Before beginning the return trek, take time to experience the lake at its most peaceful. Depending on weather and local conditions, you can try fishing, photograph the morning mist over the water, or take a short walk through the surrounding taiga forest.
There is no need to rush. This quiet morning gives you time to appreciate the remote landscape you came so far to reach.
Beginning the Journey Back
After lunch, we begin our return journey through the Khentii wilderness.
Rather than attempting to cover the entire route in one long day, we divide the return trek into manageable sections. Today we trek approximately 15–18 km, following forest trails and crossing the rugged terrain we encountered on the way to the lake.
Our pack horses continue to carry the main luggage and camping equipment, allowing you to focus on the trail and enjoy the scenery.
Overnight in the Wilderness
As evening approaches, we stop at a scenic campsite along the route between Khagiin Khar Lake and the vehicle pickup point.
Settle into camp, enjoy dinner in the quiet surroundings, and spend one more night beneath the open sky of the Khentii Mountains.
